MUMEC Museum of the Means of Communication
Museum of Regional relevance

Since December 2005, MUMEC (MUseum of the MEans of Communication) has been located in Arezzo's historic Palazzo Comunale (Town Hall building), right in the town centre.
As they enter MUMEC in Via Ricasoli n. 22, the visitor is faced with an engaging journey throughout the history of telecommunications: pre-cinema, cinema, sound reproduction, telegraphy, writing and computation from the very beginning up to technologies of our present days. MUMEC places particular care in the didactic aspect of the visits, filled with workshops to let the visitor interact as much as possible with the historical objects exhibited in the museum, making them soak up the MUMEC atmosphere.
MUMEC's mission is to preserve the history and introduce future generations to the means of communication that nowadays are used everyday without historical awareness.
Since 2018, MUMEC has been declared a ‘Museum of Regional Importance’ by the Region of Tuscany.
The prototype of what is now MUMEC dates back to around 40 years ago when the Municipality of Arezzo, in collaboration with the Museum of the History of Science in Florence (now Museo Galileo), set up an exhibition on vintage radios named ‘Il Mondo in Casa - i primi 40 anni di storia della radio’ (The World at Home- the very first 40 years of the history of radio). Pivotal was the collaboration of Prof. Fausto Casi, who made his rich collection available especially for the exhibition. Today, said collection (made by circa 2000 pieces) serves as the main body of MUMEC’s exhibition and it has expanded throughout the years to include other themes in order9 complete the history of communication.
